HIV
The first discovery of HIV dates back to 1981 in the United States. In the beginning Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had no name for HIV but after its vast clinical reports, it was named AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome). Both strains of HIV (HIV-1 and HIV-2) have originated from non-human primates in West-central Africa. The structure of HIV is different from other retroviruses as it is somewhat a spherical entity (Diameter about 120 nm) containing two copies of positive-sense single-stranded RNA made up of nine genes. Envelop of the virus is made up of host cell proteins with a cap of glycoproteins. The tropism (the types of cells it can infect) includes immune cells such as microglial cells, macrophages, and CD4+ T cells. HIV is a global public health issue which is responsible for over 40 million deaths and about 37 million living (both adults and children) are affected with HIV worldwide. As per WHO, African Regions are most affected by HIV. The modern allopathy provides antiretroviral drugs to prevent HIV transmission. Unfortunately, only about 70% of people with HIV clinically know about it.
Transmission modes of HIV
Sexual transmission: The most common mode of transmission of HIV is via sexual fluids (genital, rectal, oral, or mucous membranes). This generally occurs while having unprotected vaginal/oral/anal sex with an HIV carrier.
Pre/Post-natal transmission: Unfortunately, HIV can also be transferred from an infected mother to her child during childbirth, pregnancy, and also through breastfeeding.
Blood transmission: Nowadays this risk of transmitting HIV is extremely low due to meticulous screening and precautions. However, sharing and reusing syringes contaminated with HIV-infected blood can act a potential platform for HIV infection.
Stages of HIV infection
Stage 1: For the first two weeks of HIV infection, the patients may display a flu-like illness as a natural response of their body due to progressive failure of their immune system. At this stage, patients are generally unaware that they have been infected with HIV. For clinical detection of HIV, either a fourth-generation antibody test, antigen test, or a nucleic acid test is necessary.
Stage 2: During this stage, the activity of HIV begins at a lower level with a minimal display of any critical symptoms. Ironically, this period can vary from individual to individual form a few days to several decades. By the end of stage two the viral load starts to increase and CD4 (cells in the human immune system) cell count begins to drop allowing the HIV to display its symptoms. This period is also referred as clinical latency/HIV inactivity or dormancy.
Stage 3: This stage is the most severe phase of HIV and clinically known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). At this stage, the immune system is severely damaged exposing the patients to several life-threatening opportunistic illnesses.

➢Sharing towels
➢Sharing cutlery
➢ other forms of “casual contact”
