Cancer is a dreadful disease which involves a lot of pain and agony at the later stages. The main success in cancer treatment for any kind of medicine lies in its ability to penetrate the cell nucleus.  In Ayurveda, We use HEERAK BHASMA – Diamond Ash as a carrier that is blended with the decoction of potential anticancer herbs, which as per the Ayurvedic texts, is capacitated with the penetration ability into such cells and reach the nucleus, where the harmful mutation that has occurred is reversed.”

Cancer is a disease, the very name of which creates fear in the mind of everyone who has ever seen or experienced the suffering of losing someone to this disease. Addition to the life-threatening risks involved with this problem, the side effects of conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy has intensified the horrors of this disease, elevating it into the stratum of world’s dreadful diseases.

In recent decades, it has been seen that there has been an upsurge in the number of cancer cases globally. According to NIH – National Cancer Institute, 2016; the cancer incidence in the USA alone has been estimated to 1,685,210 new cases and 595,690 people will die from the disease. By the year 2050, the worldwide cancer cases have been projected to increase by 50% i.e., 14 million to 21 million while the worldwide cancer deaths have been projected to increase by 60% i.e., 8 million to 13 million.

Understanding Cancer: The Modern Concept

“The routine treatment in allopathic medicine involves radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery, which have serious side-effects and a patient gets entangled in a vicious circle. Cancer is an age-old disease that has existed on earth since ages and the enlightened minds formulated therapies using nature and have documented in the ancient texts of Ayurveda.”

Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells that surpasses the normal cell death cycle and continues to grow inside the body. Normal cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion, and in adults, most cells divide to replace worn-out or dying cells which are regulated by DNA. In simple words, a cell must die at a given point in time, however, a cancerous cell skips its natural death and exhibit uncontrolled division and growth. Such abnormal cells may remain localized or break away (metastasis) from their original location and lodge in other organs to repeat the uncontrolled growth and division cycle. There are about 200 types of cancer and based on location, cancer is tissue specific. For instance, breast cancer, brain cancer, lung cancer, oral cancer, and colon cancer etc.

Causes of Cancer:

Cancer can be caused by any internal or external agent that can potentially lead to an abnormal, cell growth/division viz.

  • Chemical
  • Radiation
  • Pathogen
  • Genetic mutation
  • Developmental influence
  • Aging
  • Family history
  • Genetics
  • Dietary lifestyle
  • Hormone replacement therapy etc.

Symptoms of Cancer:

Cancer signs and symptoms (both local and systemic) vary with type and stage of cancer. The allopathic treatment protocols (surgery/ chemotherapy/radiation therapy) vary in similar fashion in accordance with signs and symptoms. The general symptoms inculcate the following: –

  • Steadily worsening pains
  • A never-healing sore throat
  • Change in bowel/bladder habits
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Recurring infections
  • Weight loss
  • Low-grade fever or
  • Unusual bleeding etc.

Understanding Cancer: The Ayurvedic Concept

“We all make cancer cells every day but our immune system is very sharp and not only recognizes the cancerous cells but also sends its own army to destroy it. That is why the balance of mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health is a very important part of getting healed.”

Ayurveda concept explains different kinds of cancers under the unified concept of Tridoshic imbalance. The Earliest records in Ayurveda has been cataloged for this disease as “Apacit”. Ayurveda acknowledges that cancerous cells are always present in the body, but when the body is in the state of dosha balance (homeostasis), and then cancer will not arise. According to Ayurveda, unbalanced doshas influences gene expression which may lead to cancer. We are all made up of 3 elements known as Doshas. These are Vata dosha (Air and space) which permits movement, Pitta dosha (Fire and water) which allows transformation and is accountable for digestion and metabolism, and Kapha dosha (Water and earth) which gives structure or cohesion.  These Doshas allow all the organs of the body to work together in synchronization. In Ayurveda, any imbalance in the body system is caused by the over/under expression of one or more of the Doshas. Hence, Dosha imbalance can lead to disease according to the following basic stages:

  • Accumulation− where the effect of one or more of Doshas has increased
  • Aggravation− as levels increase for one dosha, this causes the remaining Doshas to become imbalanced
  • Overflow− the accumulated Dosha spreads into the body carrying Aama, or toxic waste products
  • Localization− the Dosha settles at a weak site in the body
  • Manifestation− symptoms
  • Disease− this would be the point where a conventional doctor would make a diagnosis of dis-ease, such as a particular kind of cancer

One major indication of health and vitality, according to Ayurveda, is the ability of the body to adapt to changing environments and external stimuli. When the body is not able to adapt to these changes, this disrupts the communication between body functions. This hampers the digestive system, causing the disturbance in metabolism (Agni) and production of Aama in the body. Aama is the accumulation of toxins in the form of non-digested matter in the circulatory system which eventually blocks tissues and cells which is a contributing factor in causing cancer.

Cancer has been classified as Arbudas in Ayurveda. Arbudas are gradually increasing the mass of big size, globular in shape, fixed with deeper structure, usually do not form puss, giving occasional pain and can occur in any part of the body.  It is based mainly on Doshic theory i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha. As per Ayurveda, two body Dhatus (the elements) Mamsa and Rakta are involved in the formation of Arbudas due to vitiation of Tridosha.  Further, by Mithya Ahara and Vihara the different humors are vitiated involving different Dhatus (Mamsa, Meda, Rakta, etc.) resulting in the growth of Arbuda.

In malignancies, Pitta is also vitiated and the condition becomes Sannipatika in nature. In these conditions, the Agni of the affected tissue is increased, making it very aggressive to its surroundings as it slowly digests the tissues of the body. While at first the interplay of the Doshas may not be clear, over time Vata imbalance predominates and the condition leads to severe wasting of the tissues of the body.

Muscular tissue is the most common Dhatu affected by cancer through any Dhatu can be. Benign tumors of muscular origin are most often described as Kapha entering into the Mamsa Dhatu and the Mamsavaha Srota. Malignant tumors of muscular origin are most often described as Pitta vitiation in the Mamsa Dhatu and Mamsavaha Vaha Srota. As the condition progresses, additional sites (Dhatus and Srotas) of the pathology become important.

In simple terms, Ayurveda adopts a distinctive view and principle to deal with this dreadful disease, to maintain the equilibriums of the three humors (body chemicals); which are body energies responsible for homeostasis. It is believed that a mutual (reciprocal) growth regulation exists between epithelial cells and immune system. Any dysfunction of these circuits could lead to tumor growth.
